What I Wore: Vintage Dior with fast fashion Celine inspired coat

The sun was setting so I had to take these photos fast.

The photo which inspired this outfit was Nicole Kidman at Cannes.

I liked the longer coat & my Zara Basic version came to mind.

The jacket

Navy wool blend, with "attached" sleeves, deep front pockets and a front gold full length zip.

This jacket has interfacing on all the pattern pieces - it gives it a very structured appearance. This aspect appealed to me.

STYLE TIP: This jacket has no waist. Do not try this at home unless you are tall or slim.

This jacket is a Celine inspired.

Resort 2012 in a leather version

Spring 2013 in a spliced leopard version

I paid $159 for it last winter.

I love the way it has gold piping on the inside where the lining is attached. This is all the way around the jacket.

The scarf

Perhaps I should call this, the wrap....

A Christian Dior 80s wool 130 cm square.
I bought this from a designer recycled shop in Sydney's Double Bay about 15 years ago.

Its a camel & maroon colour, both warm tones but it also has navy & a checked pattern which attracted me. I have hardly ever worn it, but I think it worked with the coat.

STYLE TIP: As soon as you say 'I have hardly ever worn it" its time to ask why. That's the only way you will figure out how to not let it happen again.

In my case its because the colours are wrong for my complexion. The maroon & camel tones, male me look ill & because its pattern is so bold, it needs a striking partner to take over & help it to not kill my colouring.

Why does it work?

1. The navy in the coat & the gold zip work back well with the scarf.

2. The drama of the coat matches the drama of the scarf.

STYLE TIP: I like to wear a scarf under a jacket/coat as it saves on dry cleaning the coat as often.

The top

A white cotton Trenery tee which for some reason I havent yet figured out is the most flattering tee I own. A very handy piece.

The pants

Hammock & Vine cargos from David Jones. $90 I think.

The brooch

A jacket that is stiff in its fabric begs for a brooch.
I found this small one (4 cm diameter) from Chanel at the Melbourne Collins St store. A few years ago.

A friend joked that I had found religion - yes, I worship at the later of Chanel.

The necklace

A Kaboodle fob watch chain necklace for $35.
It has a gunmetal finish - not quite gold but not too silvery either.

The rings

It wouldnt be a SIA post without the rings.

You've met both these before.
A Family Jewels multi ring ring & a Martin Margiela "scarf" ring.

Both are silver despite the gold aspects of the remainder of the outfit.

The shoes

My Roberto Cavalli for Target ballet flats.

See you tomorrow.

Nicole Kidman wearing Switzerland in Sydney's Woollahra

Personally I love the way Nicole was dressed yesterday when shopping in Sydney's Woollahra with her sister Antonia.

It was obvious she had read my recent blog post about the benefits of neutrals being like Switzerland (because they go with everything in the wardrobe) and so she had stocked up for her Sydney trip.

After all, when you travel, getting flexibility from your wardrobe is important as the reduced weight, also reduces the fuel required for your private jet!

On a freezing cold day, Nicole and Antonia shopped for toys in Sydney's Woollahra with her sister Antonia in tow, sans their kids.

Add Image

Nicole wore a tailored long line charcoal grey coat with a single placket covering the button line, although the jacket looked suspiciously like it had a double breasted form.

She totally matched the coat with a grey cowl neck sweater in various pointelle sizes. Theses two pieces were made for each other in colour and fit.

Black leggins & high black army style lace up boots with black sunnies.

The pop of colour was her grape structured handbag - very minimalist in its feeling.

Loved the lot!

Apologies for not having the designer names - stay tuned....

No comment on sister Antonia other than very ordinary & I am not even sure her bag is real!

PS: Next time you are in Woollahra, check out the following ladies clothing stores
that I love!

& that suburb is a gold mine for homewears & antiques, although priced not cheaply....

There are three ladies clothing stores in Woollahra that I love, love, love.
They are:

Riada - relaxed corporate suits and separates with some edge, luxury knits, loafers, interesting costume jewellery

Artwear by Lara - loads of black & layered & assymetrical and goth items. I dont wear the look top to toe - I only wear one piece at a time with other classic stuff. Very interesting costume jewellery.

Attic - baby sister store to Arida in Potts Point - relaxed separates, boho feeling, luxury knits.

The kids store visited by Nicole was Kidstuff. It also has stores in Double Bay & Cronulla. It has amazing kids stuff that normal suburban toy stores dont have. It also has alot of the normal "normal" toys. Please check prices with the suburbs before you buy the "normal" stuff.

Guaranteed style improvement with no effort/cost

Q: What is guaranteed to improve your look &

* Gives you close to 2 cm of height
* Makes you look slimmer by 1-2 kg
* Makes your outfit look smarter & fall better from your body
* Make a more confident you
* Manage your fat days
* Has no cost
* Has no gadgets
* Involves no gymwork
* Involves no time investment

A: Great posture.

Stand tall, shoulder back, stomach in.

Most of the red carpet guests nail this beautifully. By looking at photos and footage of themselves they can iron out any kinks in this area.

Some of them, however, well...they dont seem to have it nailed - no matter how lovely the dress, the tan, the hair - they look awful......have a look......

Kristen Stewart killing her Herve Leger SS 2009 frock - shoulders back please Kristen!

Katie Holmes - I'm sorry, but no-one should have to crouch forward like this - the organisers (or her) should have foreseen this & arranged for a compromise given her co presenter, Daniel Radcliffe is so small...she is killing that Giorgio Armani Prive dress.....

She would face this with little guy Tom Cruise all the time & as far as I am concerned, no woman should forsake her grace & her stature for some insecure guy. Stand tall woman! If he doesnt like it, get someone who isnt threatened by it.

But it gets worse....even when she isnt sharing a microphone with the little guy - her posture is killing her look & her dress...mind you, take a closer look - her breasts look like they are stuffed into the cups...its a tragically bad fit.....oh dear Mr Armani....

Milley Cyrus.....in Jenny Packham for the 2010 Oscars....killing that frock!

Michelle Williams....in a vintage lace dress at Cannes in 2008......I am going to scream....

Serena Williams butchering an Oscar de la Renta at the 2011 Met Ball.....I'm gonna cry.....

Gwyneth Paltrow in Alexander McQueen at the 2002 Oscar....apart from the see through dress factor and the no support for saggy boobs factor, she is sticking her tummy out & looks horrid....I am going to bash my head against a wall!

Emily Browning killing her Louis Vuitton at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival......I am going to put my head down the toilet!

& the serial offender, again......agghhhh...Should we be thankful she is smiling?

and again......more aaaggghhh...

Now look at this - Nicole has amazing posture & is a red carpet pro - but this dress is cut so it makes she shoulders look sloping - & makes her posture look, well, less than amazing....be careful with this!

- in Nina Ricci at the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards.....

Finally - this comparison of a Roberto Cavalli frock isnt about posture or poise - both girls, Bar Refaeli & Zhang Jingchu have great posture & even poise - but the difference is that Bar literally owns the room - her stance is fierce & super confident. In contrast, Zhang is just posing for a photo.

Maybe it has something to do with Bar telling Leo where to go!!! Go Girl!

Contrast shoes - slimming rules aka moving the eye vertically upwards

Dress with contrast coloured shoe....ever thought of doing that? ever done that?

Be careful - the contrast may cause the eye to move down to the shoes & stay down.

The last thing you want is the eye on the ground (even if the shoes are TDF). Sure, you want the shoes noticed, but ultimately, the viewer's eye should move vertically and go back up to the face. This will maximise the "flattery factor" which will make the garment more likely to be worn often and will reduce your CPW (cost per wear).

Note: I have used photos of starlets to get the principles across to you - but these "rules" apply to any garment at any price point, from discount to chain store to department store.

Let me know what you think about these ideas - they have worked for me - do they work for you?

Lets start off with some "eye staying down" contrast shoe examples......

Here's Diane Kruger with a contrast shoe which causes the eye to go down & stay down....cross.

I realise the cut of this dress makes her look hippy and yes, that also contributes to the eye never making it above waist level - but I think you get the drift....see another of my blog posts for the "blink test" which will help you work out where the eye is moving with any ensemble.

Note: Its 2011 - The "IT" bag is actually the "IT" shoe - hence shoes are SO chunky and a very dominant part of any look (think platforms, thick straps, massive hardware - so this post is very important. Yes, it wont solve world peace or hunger, but its another tool in your tool box of knowledge and confidence. Please use it!

Same for Nicole - eye goes straight to the ground...tends to stay there....cross...

So if I may - I'd like to reinforce (again) the principle of this post -

What you want is for the eye to move up & down & ultimately to stay near your (lovely) face.
You dont want the eye to move down to the shoes and stay there no matter how gorgeous your Manolos or Choos or Louboutins are)

Exception 1:

I
f the shoe contrasts but it is a flesh toned neutral.

As in the following photo - this is Cameron at a Shrek premiere....leg lengthening & (despite my close up), the shoe isnt the focus - the focus is back up at the legs/person/dress....not on the floor.....the shoe disappears....tick.

Another example is Scarlett Johansen - neutral legs/shoe - if anything the eye goes back up to her lovely face & red lipstick - tick.

Exception 2:

Incorporate the contrast colour somewhere else in your ensemble higher up the body - like a bag, a belt, a necklace, a brooch, a bracelet or earrings. Please, not all those at once.

By having the popping colour in 2 separate places, the eye will move up & down between the shoe pop & the other pop. When the eye moves up & down - you get a lengthening effect - in fact a slimming effect.

Lets look at some examples of how the two pops of colour works....

SJP pulls this off (Stella McCartney outfit) with the bag & shoe (although she has been panned for the "too dark" look of the accessories compared to the light spring look).....tick

AnnaLynne McCord pulls this off with red shoes & red nails - this is lovely (apologies if the photo is small - but you get the idea hopefully)....tick.

Cameron has linked the shoes and belt here - even though eye does move up/down to link the belt/shoes, this isnt my favourite way of getting away with this contrast look - it looks too "done"....I prefer a look that is a bit off kilter - maybe assymetrical with a contrast brooch or bracelet.....this is too "even" for me.....perhaps you agree? disagree? Please let me know.....technically this is a tick.

If you chose the bag/belt to be the other pop of colour, please, no "matchy matchy" of the leathers/skins/fabrics. Just make sure they are in harmony.

Malin Akerman works this execption beautifully - notice how her bag is a textured exotic leather while her shoes are smooth - harmonious tones with different texture....and the eye moves up & down....tick.

How many pops of colour?

If the dress is a solid colour, two places with the pop of colour are generally enough for beginners. If you amp it up to three pops, the eye starts to get a bit more challenged, but it can be done...its just (a touch) harder to do...

Exception 3:

Keep the contrast near your face -
in that case, you dont need a second point of contrast - as the eye has moved up in the process of examining the dress then the face.

Julianne Moore has done this well here - the eye moves up to the contrasting earrings against a black dress (just as well, as I am not convinced this choice of dress is flattering to her gorgeous figure, so I am pleased the eye goes to the face...hehehe)....tick.

Apologies for the full length photo - it doesnt show the emeralds clearly enough...

Cameron Diaz has managed to do this with the turquiose jewellery against a magenta (Galliano couture) dress - even though there are 2 pops here, there are close together & near the face - that works as one pop (IMO) & because of the long line of the dress, its a vertical look where the eye stops at the face.....tick.

In contrast the runway look doesnt highlight the face quite as well.

Reece Witherspoon does this well too with the satin trim of an Armani Prive dress - a column dress where the eye moves up to the decolletage...tick.....

While I have you here, there is another situation I want to talk about - hahaha - no, I talk, you listen......sometimes the dress may be a solid colour but it has "interest" via texture or sheen etc. In that case, if the "interest" is dominant compared to the contrasting shoes, the eye will in fact land in the dominant area (which may not be the shoes).....it could in fact be the boobs or the hips or whatever....

An example is Anne Hathaway at the 2009 Tony Awards in black Oscar de la Renta...you hardly blink at the red shoes - my eye lands on the beautiful full textured skirt. Luckily, its completely in proportion to the rest of the outfit & the face is lovely & everything is totally in harmony as well as the eye movement being upward to some extent - so no harm done even if the eye does in fact land below the waist. Other women are not so lucky!

So now that we've done this - here's a little quiz for you - dont worry - its little & easy....

Q: Where does the eye move in the following Reece photo (Nina Ricci frock) with yellow dress & red shoe?

scroll down for answer.....but think about it before you do....

scroll down more......just making sure you have thought about it......

A: Reece's shoes are so diminutive and the yellow of the dress is so over powering (in a good way), that the eye stays on the dress (which is a reasonably vertical line....tick) ...so it works nevertheless. Did you notice that the contrast in the shoes doesnt stand a chance in this case?

Nicole Kidman in Proenza Schouler in Australia

At the State Theatre last night for the opening of the Sydney Film Festival, Nicole Kidman looked radiant - however it appears she she couldnt get the design team at Proenzer Schouler to provide sufficient lining for her frock.

It did tick alot of boxes though:

* the vibrant velvet green was spectacular (both in colour & texture) for her delicate complexion.

* the diagonal seaming around the waist created a lovely waist definition

* the horizontal stripes on top also help to enhance a small bust such as Nicole's, further creating an hourglass shape

Now check out the runway version - Proenza Schouler AW 2011...

I loved how Nicole "summerised" the look with bare legs and strappy contrasting (but still soft toned) shoes. The shoes are Pierre Hardy.

In fact, I wonder if she picked the shoes first, then found a dress to work with them - I have been known to do that!

What else did she do well?

She asked for beige lining to bring it all together - black would have been too harsh.

But oops....

But there must have been a shortage of the beige lining...for a second there I thought she was doing a Lady Gaga look!

I would have preferred it if the lining somehow mirrored the hemline of the dress or worked in sync with it, further down....this shorty horizontal version just looks odd!

Your thoughts?
